Vanderes Foundation joins Zomia as funder

Today we are happy to share that we have closed a partnership with the Vanderes Foundation. The partnership includes the funding of dozens of new students in 2018, making them the first institutional funder on our platform.

SEATTLE/AMSTERDAM/SINGAPORE/YANGON, 21 March 2018
Zomia, a peer-to-peer lender that connects funders with students from marginalized communities, today announced a multi-year partnership with the Vanderes Foundation, a Dutch education focussed foundation. The partnership will ensure dozens of excellent students from primarily Myanmar and Cambodia will get to pursue university degrees.

“We are extremely excited by the trust Vanderes is placing in us and are happy to bring them on board as our first institutional funder. Their support will allow us to expand our offerings to additional students.” Ryker Labbee – Co-founder of Zomia

Since 2014, Zomia has extended loans to 77 students, helping them secure places in universities and lay a solid foundation on which to build their professional lives. Creating a measurable impact in the lives of its students is at the core of the young firm’s mission. 23 students have already graduated and taken jobs and 5 have completely repaid their loans.

The funding provided by Vanderes constitutes a significant part of Zomia’s 2018/2019 need. For the foundation, it is the first project they have chosen to back.

“We were very impressed by what Ryker and Kirk have done with Zomia and feel it is a great fit for us as a Foundation. We look forward to supporting them in years to come and having lasting impact in the lives of their students.” — Mirte Gosker – Chairwoman of the Vanderes Foundation

All of the funds committed by Vanderes will be directly allocated to student loans. Zomia funds its own operations through a combination of donations, other services and overpayment received on loans. Today’s partnership, through recycling of repayments, will not just provide funding for students from the 2018/2019 class, but also for years to come.

Vanderes’ funds come on top of Zomia’s regular crowdfunding and provide a basis for further institutional partnerships.
